Ollera Townsville

The lighter Calliope stranded in Ollera Creek

Surveyed in 1915 to serve the wolfram and bismuth mines on Ollera Creek …… There were more than 20 mines …… In 1905 a 10-head battery brought from Ravenswood was erected while there were 100 men working wolfram ……

Further down the Ollera Creek there was a store, from where ore was taken to Townsville by cutter…. One such lighter, the Calliope, stranded in the creek at this time …… 1927 a mill driven by a water wheel which was operating on the now Crystal Creek …… Tin mining progressed in the area and was done by miners from Townsville extensively form the 1960’s until the tin collapse in 1983. ……

There is one marked grave here, to Edith aged 19 in 1883.“They blazed the tracks” is Colin’s feature story which links the names of Mt Spec and Paluma landmarks to those who traversed the mountain spurs and rainforest- Arthur Benham, Phil Foxlee, Gard brothers

Dreghorn Ravensood
Dreghorn Cave Painting

Silver was mined in the Dreghorn area in the 1860s and 1870s but the area was abandoned with the Palmer River rush.

Of great importance, rivalling that of the prehistoric caves in Europe, was the discovery of the fossil remains of a diprotodon in 1878 by Robert Logan Jack while conducting a geological survey of the Ravenswood Charters Towers area including Dreghorn –the feature story.

Mount Britton - Mackay District

Mt Britton Mackay s
Town site today with Marlin Spikes in the background
Town in 1884

Originally known as Mount Britten, the town was surveyed in 1884, to serve the gold field on Oaky Creek. Gold was first discovered …… and was first prospected in 1881 …… By 1891 after the 1890 Eungella rush, only the Mt Britten Hotel …… remained out of the six hotels …… The mining company closed in 1890 and by 1908 the town was all but deserted …… However there was a brief resurgence in 1910 ……

…… The town today is in one of the most picturesque settings in the north, with a few building and garden remains, including a huge fig tree planted by Henry Mills to mark the birth of his first son in 1883 ……

“Fleas” is the title of the feature story of Marryatt who, in order to escape the fleas and get some sleep crawled inside a calico bag, tied it up ……
Also featured are the first impressions of Mount Britton written by Harold Finch-Hatton
